Synopsis
Act 5 concentrates on climate change. First we delve into the origins of the problem from hell. Next comes a political journey from Rio to Kyoto to Copenhagen, twenty years of frustration. We explore American angles – the rise of opposition, reluctance among environmentalists, the role of Hurricane Katrina and An Inconvenient Truth. When Bush renounces the Kyoto Protocol, the rest of the world ratifies it and a global movement comes together at last around Copenhagen. However paralysis at the international and national levels continues, so activism has shifted to sub-nationals and thousands of bottom-up movements, entrepreneurial efforts, green plans, initiatives to restore habitat or adapt to an altered world. The film concludes with visions of the future -- transforming our society into sustainable balance with nature -- and what we’ve learned from fifty years of environmentalism.
